World number one Daniil Medvedev overcame a significant hurdle on Friday in beating Taylor Fritz in straight sets, setting a big statement for both the title here and the US Open in a few weeks’ time. The defending US Open champion claimed his first Masters title here back in 2019 at the start of his evolution into the world-beater he is today and he guaranteed his place at the top of the pile for another week at least by reaching the quarter-finals on Thursday. World number seven Stefanos Tsitsipas has also impressed this week after poor performances since winning the Mallorca Championships in June. The 24-year-old overcame in-form John Isner in three sets on Friday to suggest there is plenty of room for improvement, though, with maintaining his intensity for a whole match still seemingly his main issue and that should see him come off the worst from this semi-final clash.

Medvedev is where he is because of a certain mental hierarchy he appears to hold over the rest of the ‘Next Gen’, with a 7-2 head-to-head record over Tsitsipas one of his most convincing. The Russian beat Tsitsipas in four sets at the Australian Open this January in the semi-finals but after winning the first five encounters against the Greek, Tsitsipas has clawed back two of their last four.
